On Mother's Day weekend, our hearts are turned toward the mothers of Burundi.
Unfortunately, in Burundi mothers have a 1-in-20 chance of dying during childbirth at some point in their lives. This appalling statistic is one reason why I feel called to go to Burundi and teach obstetrics to the medical and nursing students. It is so important for mothers to have access to quality maternity care when they need it most. I am honored to have the opportunity to teach African medical students how to perform c-sections to save the lives of two patients -- mother and baby!
Our teammate, Rachel McLaughlin, MD, OB/GYN, discusses the maternal health needs in Burundi and how the work at Kibuye Hope Hospital is making a difference.
We are hopeful that we can leave in June to start this adventure. But we have to be fully funded. We are so thankful to those who have already started supporting us. If you haven't yet, but are ready to take action, you can start giving here.
